A History of the Norfolk And Western Railway
The N&W was founded in 1838 as the City Point Railroad. It was originally a short line that ran between Petersburg, Virginia, and City Point, Virginia. However, the N&W quickly expanded, and by the end of the 19th century, it was one of the largest railroads in the country.
The N&W played a vital role in the development of the American South and Midwest. It transported coal, iron ore, and other goods to and from the industrial centers of the North. The N&W also played a major role in the movement of troops and supplies during the Civil War.
In the 20th century, the N&W continued to grow and prosper. It acquired new lines, including the Virginian Railway in 1959. In 1982, the N&W merged with the Southern Railway to form the Norfolk Southern Railway.
A Guide to the Norfolk And Western Railway's Lines and Locomotives
The N&W operated a vast network of lines that stretched from Virginia to Ohio. The N&W's lines were divided into three main divisions: the Eastern Division, the Western Division, and the Southern Division.
The N&W owned and operated a large fleet of locomotives. The N&W's locomotives included steam locomotives, diesel locomotives, and electric locomotives. The N&W was known for its powerful steam locomotives, including the Class A, Class Y6, and Class J.
In this book, Harris provides a detailed guide to the N&W's lines and locomotives. He includes over 200 photographs and illustrations to help illustrate the N&W's history and operations.
Norfolk And Western Railway: A History & Guide to Its Lines and Locomotives by Nelson Harris is a comprehensive and authoritative history of one of the most important railroads in the United States.
