Nathaniel English was a prominent figure in the American Revolution. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress, and was a general in the Continental Army. English was a close friend of George Washington, and was one of his most trusted advisors.

English was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1747. He graduated from Harvard College in 1764, and then studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1768, and began practicing law in Salem, Massachusetts.

English became involved in politics in the early 1770s. He was a delegate to the Massachusetts Provincial Congress, and served on the Committee of Correspondence. In 1774, he was elected to the Continental Congress.

As a member of the Continental Congress, English served on the Committee of Safety and the Board of War. He also helped to draft the Declaration of Independence.

In 1776, English was appointed a general in the Continental Army. He served under George Washington at the Battle of Long Island, the Battle of Trenton, and the Battle of Princeton.

After the war, English returned to Massachusetts and resumed his law practice. He served in the Massachusetts legislature, and was a judge on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

English died in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1825. He is buried in the Salem Common Burying Ground.
